How do I show category image (small thumbnail) before category Title below topics on listing pages?
It doesn’t show thumbnails, but there is a theme component that allows for icons:
That topic has a slick install modal that will help you install it on your site, very cool! 
Make sure to set category style to an option other than “bullet”, for the changes to appear.

Yes, I’ve already seen that. It is shame that there is no way to show it. Category image is already available so it should be an easy task to take a thumbnail of that image and show it before the category title.
