In a discussion titled “Installation time and effort” under the Installation category, Claire_C seeks insights on migrating from Salesforce forums to Discourse, asking for ballpark estimates of time and effort required. pfaffman offers professional migration assistance via his service at https://www.literatecomputing.com/services/discourse-migration/ and shares his experience: his first migration script took weeks (despite no prior Ruby knowledge), while a large-scale import (millions of posts) spanned over a month; now, he can typically produce a solid first version in one or two days. Claire_C replies, explaining she’s seeking budget approval and needs concrete time/cost estimates to present to her director. She notes the existing forums are about four years old, but the exact volume of posts and threads is still unknown.
We’re looking at moving from an established Salesforce forum to Discourse, by the looks of things we will have to migrate and integrate ourselves. Has anyone else done this? How much time/effort did it take? I’m aware that this will be different depending on a number of factors, but some ball park ideas of how long it took others may help. Thanks in advance!
I’d be happy to help with the migration if you’ve got a budget. You can post in Marketplace or see Discourse Migration - Literate Computing. (It seems like I talked to someone about Salesforce recently–apologies if it was you!)
I think my first import script (and I knew nothing about Ruby when I started) took a couple of weeks and I spent over a month on one that had some milllions of posts. Now I can usually write a good first version in a day or two.
I’m trying to get budget, which is why I’m trying to get an idea of costs and time frames. I won’t be able to get a sign off until I have more information for my director at this point.
The forums that we are looking to move are about 4 years old now. Unsure how many posts and threads we currently have.
