Introducing the admin category management page

As part of our overhaul of category setup [1][2][3], we’ve created a complete directory of categories and their specific types for easier visibility and management. The new Category management page (/admin/config/category-management) shows a list of all categories on the site and the following details:

  • Category name, visibility (i.e. public or private), and topic count
  • Parent / child relationships (e.g., Documentation > Developer Guides)
  • The category type (i.e. discussion, events, support, or ideas)
  • Quick access to category settings

You can click on the different tabs to show categories that match that particular type:

We also added a Settings tab which lists all category-related site settings for Discourse:

For our hosted customers on plans which do not currently support certain category types, an upgrade prompt will be shown. For example the Discourse Events plugin is not available on any tier lower than Business:

  1. Easily create Support categories using the discourse-solved plugin ↩︎

  2. Easily create Ideas categories using the Topic Voting plugin ↩︎

  3. Easily create Events categories using the Calendar and Events plugin ↩︎

Awesome!

Especially for the sites with no access to the /categories page due to different homepage configuration, this will provide the much needed overview page.

From the screenshots i cannot see but will the all categories page also allow drag&drop action to change sorting order of the categories?

Second question / feature request: Could the All categories page have a button to create a new category as well?

I often find it odd that I need to visit the /categories page to create a new category, even if I am trying to add a subcategory for the category page I am already on.

You can also do that in the sidebar
