Moin’s answers here are good. Creating a test user is a great approach to learning how features like this work. We don’t have a documented “key of notification icons”. It’s not something we’ve ever been asked about before, and they all are (or should be) self explanatory in the interface.

no because it is not their own post

I think you can also receive edit notifications for posts that are not your own. When you watch a topic that you didn’t create, where the first post is a wiki and is edited, you are notified. I think I also remember receiving a notification when a post I had flagged was edited.

The situation arose for me when one of the mods asked me about a notification, giving me a screen shot. It wasn’t obvious why they were getting the notification. Having a key to reference might have helped.
