The discussion revolves around limiting group owners’ ability to add users to their groups. Pad_Pors suggests implementing a user profile setting to limit being added to groups or setting a limit for group owners to manually add members. However, sam expresses concerns that these suggestions may not be effective and could limit the role of group managers.
Riking proposes an “invite” system, where users receive notifications and can choose to join groups. tgxworld suggests a site setting to restrict the number of members group owners can add per day. Pad_Pors agrees that an invitation system would improve user experience and solve issues of users being unaware of their group membership.
However, sam remains cautious about making changes, citing existing protections against abusive group managers and suggesting only a minor adjustment to expand the max users notified per group mention setting to apply to PMs to groups.
should a group manager be able to manage users out of the group or inside it? I guess the second is more relevant.
from a user point of view, @riking suggestion makes a better user experience.
it also solves the problem that users don’t understand they are in a group, unless they get some private message.
I am just uneasy making any changes here, there are already protections in place to ensure that abusive “group managers” can do only so much damage: max users notified per group mention.
I guess the only possible change I am open to here is expanding this setting so max users notified per group mention also applies to PMs to group (if it is not now)
Overall, I am not too enthused about making any kind of changes here.
