More friendly category creation

Someone pointed out that creating categories and tags feels cumbersome, and that this friction might discourage new admins from adopting Discourse.

I asked Gemini to generate a category planner. The result looks quite nice. I don’t think it should or could be added to Discourse as-is, for many (good) reasons, but it’s still interesting to look at. It might spark ideas for Discourse’s future.

Context: How to add multiple tags up front

Moving a category outside a parent is a bit wonky. You must drag it onto the parent, then to the left. Not intuitive, but again, this is more of an interface concept than a real solution.

The Discourse admin UI can feel harsh at first. The software is complex, full of settings, and has grown even more complex over the years. An overhaul of some parts of the administration by making them more visual, interactive and playful, especially the areas people hit right away when they try to configure the basic options of their community, could be worthwhile.

I wonder how many people turn away from Discourse after being intimidated by the current interface.

I decided to make this topic after this reaction to Gemini’s creation:

We are currently planning on improving category creation, including all the various features categories can encompass (voting, solutions, etc) — all your feedback is very true!
