I turned on experimental nested replies. But people are telling me they can’t understand it, and worse, posted messages just disappeared. I disabled it - and got an error page for missing message for every post in every category. So i cannot revert. A disaster. How do we debug this?

I think you’ve posted in the right place - otherwise someone would likely have moved the topic already, just as someone added the tag to help get the right eyes on it.
However, you’re asking about a very new feature, so there probably aren’t many community members who have experience with it yet. Also, since it’s the weekend, it’s unlikely that someone from the Discourse team will take a closer look right away.
If you’re looking for a faster response, posting in Marketplace might be another option.
Could you post some screenshots of what you’re seeing? I certainly want to fix this ASAP but it’s a bit unclear to me what exactly is happening.
You caught us on the weekend. 
Can you try to swap the /n/ in the URL to /t/ (or vice versa) and see if that at least makes the topic load?
Also did you turn nested replies off in the site settings? Or toggle it off on topics?
