New mentions tab in the user menu

The user menu now has a dedicated Mentions tab, sitting just below Replies.

The tab shows every post where someone @mentioned your username directly, both unread and previously read ones, all in one place.

Unread direct mentions get their own badge count on the tab so they’re easy to spot at a glance. Dismissing mentions only clears that tab so your Replies and other notification tabs are unaffected.

When will I see this?

This is an upcoming change (enable_user_menu_mentions_tab). It starts at Beta status, which means sites following the default Upcoming Changes policy will have it turned on automatically for everyone. If your site is already up to date, you may already see the new tab.

Admins can control rollout at any time in Admin › Upcoming Changes:

  • Everyone – on for all members (the Beta default)
  • Staff only – useful if you want to try it out before opening it up
  • Specific groups – roll it out gradually
  • No one – opt out if you need more time

Try it out

  1. Click your avatar to open the user menu.
  2. Look for the Mentions tab below Replies.
  3. Post in a sandbox topic and have someone @mention you to see it land there in real time.
  4. Use the Dismiss button inside the Mentions tab, confirm that your Replies count stays unchanged.

:megaphone: What do you think?

Does having a dedicated Mentions tab make it easier to keep track of direct callouts? Any edge cases we should know about? Share your feedback below — we’d love to hear it.
