Despite globally defaulting “New” to mean never viewed…
…and regardless of a user’s setting:

…to fit my sitewide default setting:
…but that won’t help any user who has changed from the default.
The differences between Latest, New, Unseen, and Unread are esoteric enough that I sometimes have to hover for the tips myself. It’s bound to confuse an average user if one of the tips is misleading.
Would it be feasible to build in a set of tooltip texts for New, keyed to the available options, and display the one for the user’s chosen setting?
