Option to limit the 'Me too' button to those who reply in the thread

Continuing the discussion from Solved improvements: Allowing members to indicate they're experiencing a reported issue:

Hi

The request here is to be able to limit the Me too button to be used only by members who reply to the topic. The main reason for that is that throughout the years in our forum, members who were facing the same issue would reply and post that they are facing the same issue. These replies are very helpful and sometimes quite necessary since they might include additional debug info such as versions, steps to reproduce…etc that even the OP might have missed.

We don’t want members to assume that Me too is sufficient when they could help by being more engaged and reply to the thread.

I have thought about creating a custom button that works in a similar way but takes the person to a form or the related bug ticket but that would also decrease the engagement within the forum which is not preferred (maybe after they’ve posted).

However, here is the advantage to how limiting the button to those in the thread could help:

  1. We keep the engagement with the replies, and use the Me too button to encourage replies so that if they want to use the button they actually need to reply with that additional information
  2. For the forum maintainers, when checking the list of people who clicked ‘me too’ they will be able to see some additional description and answer questions such as is everyone on the same version…etc
  3. The ‘Me too’ continues to function in the same helpful pattern (send notifications, shows a counter, prompts anonymous visitors to login…etc)

If the button could show the logged-in members a similar prompt message to the one shown for anonymous visitors but with something like “please reply with additional information first” (we request info such as software version…etc), that would also be superb.

I think as a middle-ground we could have both options (to reply or just be listed) but after a prompt asks them if they would like to reply with anything that they’d like to share. :slight_smile:

I’m not quite sure where the point of the “Me too” button lies.

In that case, it would be the same as the “Reply” button. Users would click “Me too” to enter a reply, and the “Me too” count would equal the number of users who replied.

You’re right, and in this case the ‘Me too’ button would be just an incentive to encourage people to reply. :grin:

I’ve added one tiny detail above which might make a difference now:

So people can be listed in the ‘me too’ but before that they are prompted with a reminder to reply if they have any helpful information. Does that sound better?

I think that is indeed the case. As a complement to the incentive, this is a more suitable scenario.

If you want to participate, simply click “Me too”. Seeing the prompt encourages users to think one step further, guiding them through the process.
