Passkey Option not available

AI-generated summary

A user reports that the Passkey option is missing from their account settings, while it appears correctly for other users on the same Discourse version (2026.10.0-latest). The affected user has standard 2FA enabled, but no warnings or strikes are present. awesomerobot suggests this may be due to browser incompatibility, noting that older or custom browser forks might not support passkeys. To diagnose, they recommend checking if typeof PublicKeyCredential returns function in the browser console; a return of undefined would indicate lack of support.

Hi,

i have a user who reports he can’t add a Passkey, because the option is completely missing in his user settings. Myself and another User have the option available.

I can’t really find why this happens, the Users have the same level, no warnings or strikes…

It’s just simply not there:

This is the mobile view, but i already checked and for me it appears correctly on mobile as well.

The only difference seems to be, that the user who misses the option has a normal 2FA configured, but i kinda doubt, this would cause the Passkey Option to vanish…

Installed is Discourse 2026.10.0-latest.

Any clue why this happens?

Which browser and version are they using? older browsers might not support passkeys, and it’s possible some custom forks of common browsers don’t either.

If they can access the browser console (might not be able to on mobile) and paste in typeof PublicKeyCredential it should return function if passkeys are supported, if the browser doesn’t it would return undefined
