Persistent unread post for certain topics

Would love to see an importer for Google Groups mailing lists too, but scraping out Groups content looks to be a bit messy. There is a bash script for generating an mbox from a Google Group which works with a bit of fiddling (need a cookie file to get emails). It also has options for picking up new posts which helps in mirroring, though i haven’t tried it. Perhaps that would be an approach if mbox imports were rock solid and repeatable. Every time there is new content, I visit the thread, read it, and then am presented with this ‘old’ unread notification:

This unread topic persists no matter how many times I subsequently visit the topic. It also keeps my unread thread count at (1), which makes me sad.

Not sure that I can provide more detailed repro steps than ‘visit a certain topic with new content, read all new content, experience 1 persistent grey unread post’, but should be able to diagnose what’s going on from my TopicUser for that topic here on meta.

This is due to the usage of Whispers, there are multiple topics about it already.

This topic says there are 2 unread posts in it, but I can’t find them. I’ve scrolled through the entire thing. I’m guessing there are either deleted posts or whisper posts in it… The URL changes from /44 to /42 after I click on it in the topic list. I haven’t tried to do “dismiss unread” yet in case it’s helpful to leave it in this state to get more info before I attempt that. [image]

There’s a workaround:

The “fix” is to reply to the topic yourself in public (or get someone else to) so the topic does not end on a whisper.

You can also dismiss the topic from your Unread tab.
