Please help me with the colour picker

Can someone please tell me what is going on here? I have no idea how these little coloured boxes relate to the colour being chosen.

Those are the colors you can choose for the categories. You can also enter an Hex value with a custom color.

For example:

The colors with a inside indicate those already used for other categories.
