Post vs Topic

AI-generated summary

The discussion revolves around understanding the difference between a Topic and a Post on Discourse. NoamH initiates the conversation, and piffy explains that a post is a specific message, while a topic is a collection of posts. piffy also highlights the difference between replying to a post and replying to a topic, with the latter not including the reply context.

Jagster further clarifies that a topic encompasses the entire thread, and individual comments are considered posts. ondrej supports this explanation and provides visual aids to illustrate the difference. Stephen adds that Discourse uses the term “topic” instead of “thread.”

sorry for my dummy question but I’m trying to understand what is difference between Topic and Post and the difference between those replies

Replying to a post is intended for typing up a message that responds specifically to one post. The reply context will be included in your new post and the person you are replying to will get a notification

Versus if you are replying to the topic generally, there is no reply context included

On a side note, the default behaviour on Discourse is that “replying” to a post directly above yours causes the reply context to be removed when the post is published. I think the default behaviour is confusing because of the inconsistency but fortunately it can be changed in the Settings:

Thank you for the tip! so Topic is equal to Post?

No. This whole thread is a topic. All replies and comments are individual posts.

In addition to what @Jagster said

1 = Reply to the post
2 = Reply to the topic

Except that Discourse doesn’t have those, otherwise yes :grimacing:
