Private forum and SEO

I just wonder is there any side effects for SEO in private forums?

I mean will google still crawl the forums and index the topics while the sitemap is not accessible for visitors like google’s robots in private mode?

If login is required then there is no SEO since the crawler doesn’t log in. If crawlers could see the private site then it would not be private.
