Renaming a tag from the tag wrench will update the name for all the existing tags on your topics as well. 
There shouldn’t be any adverse effects.
ETA: Though if you use the Tag Icons theme component then you will need to update the relevant record in there with the updated spelling to get the icon to show up. I think this one caught me out before.

שינוי שמות או עריכת תגים היא תמיד פעולה בכל הפורום. קטגוריות, נושאים, הודעות פרטיות… כל דבר משתמש באותו התג בכל הזמן.
As Jagster said, editing the tag name will update the displayed tag name everywhere that tag is used.
Though if you’re looking for more peace of mind then I think setting up a test tag you can have a play with can be really helpful so you can see it in action before you commit to making any changes to your actual live tags.
