REQUEST: Highly Effective Age Assurance (OneID Phone No. Age Verification) Integration

Hi there, apologies if this is the wrong section. Long time self hosted but first user of this forum.

UK Online Safety Act (2023) has basically made it a challenging time for UK based communities. The crux of it is that we need to conduct HEAA for our users on our micro-mmo indie game to ensure they’re all adults due to some of the themes and features in the game (in-game chat, DMs, weapon crafting that ‘can be translated into real life instruction’).

Unfortunately those features, according to Ofcom, mean that minors are at risk. We can’t remove those core features from our game without jeopardizing the product, so our userbase needs to be age verified.

The simplest solution is using OneID, which is a UK mobile number verification system which is OSA compliant. OneID® Age Verification | Online Age Verification | Age Verification

Their API supports an “Is over 18+” flag once the user inputs the OTP sent to their mobile number. https://docs.oneid.uk/services/age-verification

I am here to ask politely for this integration to be considered for Discourse. Whilst I suspect we’re a small demographic, it would really help out the UK Discourse community.

Hmm… if your main site has age verification, you might be able to use SSO. A plugin might be able to accomplish this task; if you have a budget, you can post in Marketplace.

You make a good point, not currently using SSO (forums / user accounts separate atm) but ultimately weighing options :slight_smile:

SSO would probably be easiest, especially if your main site is doing the verification and you’ve got a programmer to write the integration. It’s not immediately clear how hard it would be to write a plugin for discourse that would call their API to do the integration.

Hello thank you for your response. Just quick FYI - Main site isn’t currently doing any age verification juuust yet. Good points regarding SSO, but somewhat keen to keep game accounts & forum accounts separate for the time being and conduct HEAA on Discourse.
