Restore fails with function “post_replies_sync_reply_id” already exists with same argument types

@pfaffman is experiencing issues while restoring a Discourse database from a PostgreSQL 10 server to a PostgreSQL 12 server. The restore process fails with an error message indicating that the function “post_replies_sync_reply_id” already exists with the same argument types.

@pfaffman suspects that the issue may be related to migrations from January, which also involved the post_replies_sync_reply_id function. As a temporary solution, they were able to restore the database by deleting it and manually importing the backup file using psql < backup-file.sql. However, they still need to restore several other databases.

This has not been a good day. This is a site that I had earlier problems with that were due to my screwing up an attempt to replicate the database to another server. These problems later resulted in filling the disk and then breaking postgres altogether. Now I’m trying to restore to a different database server. Backup was taken on a recent discourse on a PG10 server and restoring to PG12.

When I attempt to restore, it fails with

ERROR: function "post_replies_sync_reply_id" already exists with same argument types
EXCEPTION: psql failed: ERROR: function "post_replies_sync_reply_id" already exists with same argument types

I see a couple migrations back in January that have post_replies_sync_reply_id in them, so perhaps this is not related to my own botched database issues.

EDIT: I solved the problem for this database by deleting the database, doing a psql < backup-file.sql, but I’ve got a few others that I need to restore still.
