Discord SSO by server already exists, and others have found solutions to sync roles.

Yeah but I don’t want people to be able to sign up at all if they don’t have a certain role. The only alternative would be to give them a zero-permission role after sign up and then change their Discourse role when their Discord role is synced but that’s a bit iffy.

If categories are secured behind roles then I don’t see the problem. This works today.
Either way, discord SSO integration exists as an official plugin, so I’m not sure how much traction you could get requesting this as a feature.

have any of you found the way to go to get Discord sign-ups restriction by role working?
I have been looking for it, No luck so far. Most folks are just saying it already has Discord and server locking.
