Search shows topics from muted category

AI-generated summary

The discussion revolves around the behavior of muted categories in search results. Jagster expected that muting a category would prevent topics from that category from appearing in search results, but discovered that this is not the case. Moin suggested that this behavior is intentional, citing that muting only prevents notifications and topics from appearing in the “latest” section, but not from search results. Jagster expressed dissatisfaction with this behavior, but acknowledged it is not a significant issue.

I was searching explanation why settings of a theme has color palette, when none of themes are following that, and I got a hit from Marketplace . But I’ve muted it, and that’s why I was a bit supprized.

My expecation was that when I mute a category I don’t want to see anything from it. I understand logic why such topic popped up, but I would still like to know if that behaviour is by design, and if yes, why my preferences are overdriven (because an user knows best, even when crippled her/himself )

I think it is intentional. Muting doesn’t say that the topic will not appear in search.

Not even the one for topics says that

You will, for example, also see posts of a muted topic in the activity of a user.

I don’t like that, but sure — this isn’t that big thing. Just a thing.
