Is there an admin setting that I can toggle to default links to other posts/topics to expanded state instead of collapsed by default?:
I searched and found this old topic:
Edit - So default would be:
that topic is about the hide details feature, not oneboxed local links.
i’m not sure it’s really possible to do what you are wanting. there is no setting and i am certain any component will require a rebake of any existing posts. i tried a bit of a hack at this with an initializer but it loses the formatting and kind of breaks the oneboxed text from the link. and it required me to adjust the Post onebox maxlength site setting to something really high like 100000.
Thanks Yes realized it was different, should have been clear about that. Similar, but could not find existing post so linked to the closest thing I could find.
I’ve found that often when collapsed the formatting is very jumbled and squeezed to the point of not being very useful. So would have preferred to just have it default to expanded with the option to collapse for those times when maybe it’s an extremely long post.
Maybe in the future, discourse can make that that a setting based on character or word limit.
In any case thanks for the confirmation. I understand the challenge.
I’m not submitting a feature request, because that process is flawed: it judges requests by popularity rather than merit. A feature might be genuinely valuable, but if it only improves the experience for a smaller group, it gets ignored in favor of something that affects more people, even when the less popular request carries equal or greater inherent value. Popularity and value aren’t the same thing, and treating them as if they are means good ideas get overlooked.
So even browsing through the features requested, I’ve seen a lot of good ones there with 0 votes or otherwise left to die.
