Sometimes people just want to share things they are doing with Discourse that may be of interest to others here, but aren’t necessary intended to be discussions about Community Building or a Customization that others can use.
They are more in the spirit of “I made a thing” or “show and tell”.
It’s not clear yet where these belong or how much of this to expect here. But after seeing a couple of them land this morning and being a bit unsure where to put them, I asked around and decided that for now the best place is in General with a tag show-and-tell.
So, there’s a few things there now.
We’ll see what pattern emerges and whether it deserves any more structure than that.
I think it’d be very cool to see you share something like that in its own show-and-tell topic, particularly if you’re interested in hearing people’s thoughts and questions about it.
Thanks, I shared for feedback but mainly got reactions. I go live in a week, so will post the official plugins here and possibly share the theme-engine I’m using as well.
not really sure what this topic is for but i’ll post anyways.
ok then. this is a very small thing and i guess is something. not sure how interesting it is though - i added a simple dynamic event countdown timer (i’m sure i could add some more formatting options and bells, whistles and translation, but i think i only spent no more than 20 minutes on it and for a specific usecase). has options for setting a date and custom text strings and plug-in outlet to use.
I appreciate you sharing them and getting me thinking about this.
I think there should be space for both kinds of things: a) just sharing what you’re doing for feedback and inspiration, and 2) sharing themes/plugins that others can use.
One doesn’t have to imply the other. Just want to help set expectations for different kinds of discussions.
Happy to hear your thoughts about what that should look like here in terms of site structure or cultural norms too!
It’s been a while since I built a component for a web radio. I’m not sure if it’s worth mentioning here, but here goes: it basically works with Shoutcast/Icecast.
For some time, I wanted some kind of music functionality so I could use the site while listening to something, and I made that happen. You can browse the site without the music stopping since it’s an SPA.
We share all product release news & security info via the community, so it’s very important that customers are alerted when new topics are posted.
I built this “subscription checker” that looks to see if users have elevated notificaiton levels in that category. If they don’t meet/exceed the minimum notification level, this banner populates above the topic. Clicking the button in the banner sets their notification level for the category.
For our News categories, our expectation is that they have watching first post:
Note: only our security team can post/reply in this category, hence whywatching is expected.
This is useful for users who don’t have an active service contract. For those users, I automatically set their notification levels upon registration and have a periodic check when they visit the community for any new service contracts.
I mean, if you’re all doing it, it can’t be wrong, right?
Maybe this topic is the right place to share things like this… and then if you/we really want more feedback for any given thing, there’s still the option to make a dedicated topic.
