Yes, server load gets exponentially higher with large topics. We put in some basic mitigations (you’ll note that dates don’t appear on the timeline, etc) but it’s still expensive. In general megatopics are not a good idea, so removing features to mitigate the performance disaster they cause, while …

No, this is intentional to reduce server load. It is not advisable to allow topics to grow without bound. You are creating a de facto chat room with infinite history.
