This is mentioned as expected behaviour Closed Topics Listed as Unread - #3 by codinghorror. But I’ve only just noticed this pop up over on https://discuss.elastic.co as of late, in that I don’t recall previous topics I followed being shown as unread when they are auto-closed.
Is this a configurable setting we can change (that I can’t immediately see)?

It is not configurable, but I have seen a similar request recently here:
