Translations about Bump šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ø

I am opening a new discussion so that those of us who speak Spanish can reach an agreement on how we should name or call the Discourse function known as ā€œBUMPā€.

What is Auto-Bump

For those who are not aware, it is a feature that allows the system (the @system user of all Discourse forums) to revive—that is, to bring back as active—topics that are very low on the activity list, open topics that might be forgotten if no one bumps them.

If you need more information, there are discussions in the forum explaining how to use it. It is not the purpose of this discussion to explain what it is and how it is used.

What do we call it in Spanish

Do we call it BUMP? Or should we call it something else?

Keys for translation via Transifex (?)

  • Key: js.topic.auto_bump.title
    .../client.en.yml#L1832
    In English: ā€œAuto-Bump Topicā€
    In Spanish: ā€œAuto-Bumpā€

  • Key: js.action_codes.autobumped
    .../client.en.yml#L154
    In English: ā€œautomatically bumped %{when}ā€
    In Spanish: ā€œbumped automĆ”ticamente %{when}ā€

  • Key: js.composer.composer_actions.toggle_topic_bump.label
    .../client.en.yml#L1500
    In English: ā€œToggle topic bumpā€
In Spanish: ā€œAlternar BUMP del temaā€

  • Key: js.composer.composer_actions.toggle_topic_bump.desc
    .../client.en.yml#L1501
In English: ā€œReply without changing latest reply dateā€
In Spanish: ā€œResponder sin alterar la fecha de Ćŗltima respuestaā€

  • Key: js.topic.status_update_notice.auto_bump
    .../client.en.yml#L1843
In English: ā€œThis topic will be automatically bumped %{timeLeft}.ā€
In Spanish: ā€œLa fecha de este tema serĆ” actualizada %{timeLeft}.ā€

  • Key: js.topic.actions.reset_bump_date
    .../client.en.yml#L1930
    In English: ā€œReset Bump Dateā€
    In Spanish: ā€œResetear fecha Bumpā€

  • Key: js.category.num_auto_bump_daily
    .../locales/client.en.yml#L2412
In English: ā€œNumber of open topics to automatically bump daily:ā€
In Spanish: ā€œNĆŗmero de temas abiertos a revivir diariamente:ā€

On second thought, my translation is not accurate. ā€œThe date of this topicā€? A user might ask: What does that refer to? The first post?

On the other hand, I don’t think leaving ā€œauto-bumpā€ as is is a good idea either, as it could be just as confusing, if not more so, for certain groups of users (especially those who don’t know English).

In other languages:

  • French: Remonter automatiquement le sujet (something like ā€œreassembleā€)
  • German: Thema automatisch nach oben verschieben (automatically move the topic to the top)
  • Finnish: Nosta ketjua ajastetusti (raise the thread)
  • Chinese: åˆ‡ę¢äø»é¢˜ē½®é”¶ (switch topic to pinned/top)

In some forums, I’ve seen the translation rendered as reactivate.

These are the options I’ve found. Can anyone think of any others to discuss?

In my case, I think the German option is appropriate because it explains more clearly what the function does, and in Spanish, we don’t have the luxury of having a specific word like bump for this.

There are more keys referring to BUMP; I have updated the topic.

All of them are in the ā€œclientā€ section, meaning on Transifex you can access them via: https://www.transifex.com/discourse/discourse-org/translate/#es_ES/core-client-yml

For the key js.topic.auto_bump.title, I think the best option is to keep ā€œAuto-Bumpā€ as is. In reality, the end user doesn’t see much of the ā€œauto bumpā€ part; they only see when the System revives the topic and they see the description:

BUMPED AUTOMATICALLY xx HOURS AGO

(see key: js.action_codes.autobumped)

In my community, I posted an announcement in the meta section explaining what ā€œBUMPEDā€ means so that curious users understand its purpose :+1:

However, for the rest of the keys, end users don’t see them… only staff members would read them, and those people should already know what ā€œbumpā€ means in Discourse.

Question:

When you mention putting that, which key would it be?

I am referring to the general concept of bumping a post, so that when we decide how to translate that concept, we can debate each key as appropriate.

Sure, let’s go over the concepts then:

  • BUMP: ā€œmove the topic upwardā€ (revive or re-activate).
  • Auto-BUMP: ā€œautomatically move the topic upwardā€.

After that, we’ll see how the keys turned out…

For my part, I think the terms you mention are very appropriate.
Regarding the keys, translating and keeping the term consistent is sufficient.

If no one has any objections, we will gradually start changing them.
