Trouble enabling https for hosted instance

Trouble enabling https for a hosted Discourse instance is being discussed. AlphaWolfSam turned on “use https” but encountered an error page and is seeking help. neil pointed out that an SSL cert needs to be installed before enabling https. AlphaWolfSam is unsure about obtaining an SSL certificate and asks if the existing domain’s certificate can be used. neil advises using the admin dashboard to request SSL installation, as the instance is hosted.

Hey there! We’re relatively new to discourse and my boss has given me the task of enabling https for Discourse. I turned on “use https” but I didn’t have much success… nothing seemed to change and I reach this error page when trying to access our forum using https:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

The checkbox did warn you that you need to have an SSL cert installed and working before turning it on. I guess you skipped that part?

I did see that, but I wasn’t sure exactly how to go about doing that. Do I need a new SSL certificate just for discourse or can I use the one that we’re using for our existing domain?

The other thing I should ask is if we choose not to use https, can we redirect users who try and access https to the regular https site?

Oh I see that you’re one of our hosted customers. In that case you can go to your admin dashboard (/admin) and there’s a button to request SSL be installed for you.
