Using type: group in plugins

Based on the discussion in this thread: Is type: group no longer working in plugins? - Support - Discourse Meta

I’d like to confirm whether type: group was never implemented or if it was removed.

  1. If it was never implemented, could it be added in the future, similar to type: category?

  2. If it was removed, what was the reason?
