Thank you both for taking the time to help.
I can now confirm that users who have a Meta account only need to sign in here and then navigate to ask.discourse to also be signed in.
I was able to then search for and invite the user to a topic, yay!
(I must be getting old, where is the Solution box? Or is it not enabled for Site feedback?)
