Issue with mentioning large groups: Shawnpinto reported an issue where they couldn’t mention a group with more than 250 members. They were previously able to mention groups with over 10,000 members until mid-December 2022.
JammyDodger mentioned that an engineer is working on improving the performance of @mentions for large user groups and a fix is expected soon.
Roman_Rizzi explained that the limit was introduced in a recent update (https://github.com/discourse/discourse/pull/19666) and Shawnpinto was able to resolve the issue by editing the field to enter a higher amount.
Meanwhile, merefield suggested splitting the mention limit between staff and non-staff, to which JammyDodger replied that this can be achieved using the ‘Who can mention this group’ controls.

Can this be split between staff and non-staff? Maybe it already is?
I think you could already do that by using this in conjunction with the ‘Who can mention this group’ controls? For any group with over x amount of members you can have it as ‘Admin and Moderators only’, and then the @mention will display as eg @team, but no one will get a ping unless a staff member uses it.
(Fun forum fact: not even admin can ping @team on here now after I accidentally used it about 15 times in my first week… )
