This is great, thanks. I wonder whether there should be some visual indication that a post has been bookmarked (like there currently is when a whole topic has been).
It is there if any post is bookmarked you will see a bookmark icon in the header:
I do think we can do something fancy with the timeline as well for very long topics, but this is a bit of a stretch goal.
Do you mean on the post or on the topic?
On posts, the bookmark icon is visible when it’s bookmarked, while it’s usually hidden behind .... Of course, that can be different on your forum, depending on how you configured the post menu. Since Change bookmark icon for non-bookmarked posts on mobile view, the icon no longer toggles just between gray and color, but between a gray outline and filled with color.
I mean on the topic.
The bookmark icon at the bottom changes to blue when the topic has been bookmarked. When a post has been bookmarked (but the topic has not) there is no indication that anything is different until after you click the grey outline bookmark icon (when you see details of the bookmarked posts).
I’m aware of the bookmark icon at the top of the topic and within the relevant post. But on mobile there’s a big difference between being at the top and bottom of the topic.
It’s a great improvement as it is.
There is … it says Edit bookmark/s
Its a bit of an edge case there is no perfect answer of what to do here, I am on the fence
Not on mobile there’s not. I suppose I’m looking for some equivalent of the desktop “Edit bookmarks…” prompt but on mobile. I’m not sure that’s an edge case.
Good point @chapoi given this should we revert back to filling it? otherwise mobile gets no hint.
I was going to add that, against what I’ve been saying, the top-of-topic bookmark icon is obvious when you scroll down – then I noticed that it’s not working properly. Feel free to move to a new topic if this hasn’t been reported before.
Thanks for considering this. Maybe there’s some middle ground, like a blue outline bookmark icon.
No, I would prefer to keep the behaviour as it was. The main icon should only indicate the topic has been bookmarked imo. The same confusion can apply in reverse too: “it looks like i bookmarked the topic while I only bookmarked a post”.
Looking at it on the desktop here (Meta Branded theme) and comparing to mobile (ioS Hub app) it’s confusing anyway, because on desktop the bookmarked icon is outlined whereas on mobile it is solid. This observation applies to the button at the bottom as well as the one beside the topic title. (In each case it does go from grey to coloured so is not internally inconsistent.)
If you are having both outlined and solid then why not make it signify something?
- Grey outlined – no bookmark.
- Coloured outlined – post(s) bookmarked.
- Coloured solid – topic bookmarked (whether or not a post is also bookmarked).
Also, it’s odd that when you have posts bookmarked you can edit/delete them from the bottom button, but if you then bookmark the topic those options disappear.
Until today I hadn’t realised you could bookmark a whole topic. Maybe I had and had forgotten. Anyway, it’s the same sort of logic as I had in mind with the “solved” plugin: being able to mark the whole topic, or an individual post, as “solved” (Mark topic as solved without specifying solution post).
That’s not intended. I’ll take a look
Not really odd, the same happens if you have more than 1 post bookmarked. We can’t show unlimited edits/deletes for everything, so only when there is only 1 you get those options. When there are more you need to navigate to the local post to do so.
Maybe the odd thing is having the Edit/Delete options at the bottom of the page for something in the middle of the page. It might be better just to have the “Jump to” links and nothing else even if there is only one post bookmark.
Overall I do like this new feature as it was hard to find bookmarked posts. Thanks.
Fair point, the inconsistency is odd. What do you think @sam ?
I think access to bookmarks should be in the sidebar, not in the notifications area (user icon submenu). It’s no notification, it’s a topic list (curated by me). Just an idea. Noticed that completely inexperienced users have no idea there are bookmarks and what they are for and where to see them. Also when I go to bookmarks I reset my unread notifications badge, which is never intended. We already have My posts, My messages, My drafts. We could have My bookmarks too.
I don’t think it is confusing, we can strip the convenience here but it feels like just making it harder for people cause we want to be “technically correct”.
My take is for an end user
- A post in a topic is bookmarked, therefore my topic is bookmarked
- A topic is bookmarked, therefore my topic is bookmarked
I don’t think we need to jump through hoops to explain the nuance and difference between the 2, they are practically the same.
My pref here is just to fill the bookmark glyph, but if we don’t want to do that cause we insist on teaching then this imo is a reasonable compromise and it works on mobile:

Not for me ![]()
- when a topic is bookmarked, that whole topic has something I need later
- when a post is bookmarked, that one post has something I need later, but I don’t want to browse whole topic
Or did I miss your point?
thats not the reason about being technically correct. Its about maintaining a consistent mental model so a user needs not wonder why the edit/delete actions are sometimes there and sometimes not, as already shown in the feedback received
Then you go the whole way and just strip the feature we just added.
Footer button is for topic bookmarks not for post bookmarks.
The way I see it … the confusion started from:
My topic is bookmarked but I can not tell it is bookmarked on mobile.
(I have a post bookmarked in the topic therefore my topic is bookmarked)
