As said by @merefield himself in the Layout Plugin topic, there is a potential theme component replacement. I’ve mentioned him as he’ll be able to give you more guidance here I think.

I’ve built a potential replacement for Layouts, anyone is welcome to try it out, and it is now a Theme Component: It does require the use of self-sufficient Components that source their own data.
