This feature was available for “inbox” messages but it doesn’t seem to be there for regular topics: there’s a counter for the number of views for the 1st post. What about a counter for the each post, or at least the last post? This way we would know how many folks are up to date with the latest. Is that an existing feature, or maybe a plugin?

I’m confused by this solution. The linked github repo describes things a whole theme in itself, not a component/plugin I can add to my theme.
The repo linked is a Theme Component:
The file structure and presence of the about.json file makes it so.
You can install it like a normal component in the Admin panel, and add it to your theme.
