Where is the Version

Since a few changes back and with the new Admin Dashboard it became increasingly hard to find the actual Version/Release number of my Discourse installation. It only shows commit hashes and “esr” as a tag, but not the actual version number. It is only briefly shown in the “update required” message. But after that - unfortunatelly I did the update and now want to document the new version - it isnt shown anymore?

BTW: there is no update tag here, either.

Hm, there is no such section in my (default) (new) Dashboard. But I am sure i havent hidden it, so it get lost while going to the new Dashboard layout..

I also dont find the config to enable it:

We have added a redesigned system section. By default it can be found at the bottom of the dashboard (you can move this up in the configure menu).

This is visible for self-hosters only.

my syxstem is a self hosted (based on the Git Docker project) system and I dont see it.

Also, an easy way (for me, anyway) to get the version is check the page source; it’s near the top. It’s control-U on Windows and Linux, so it’s 1 keystroke on any Discourse site, regardless of if you’re admin, logged in, or what page you’re on.

What’s your current Discourse version? I wonder if you are tracking the stable branch/ESR and therefore have to wait until next year for that feature.

I think in that case you could disable the upcoming change and use the old dashboard.

Upcoming changes receive improvements. You chose a version that changes less often, so you will have to wait.

not sure what I should wait on, but sure. My post was mostly reporting a bug and asking a usage question. I guess the answer is “it’s currently broken in stable branch”?

Yes today to the new version, but I think it was missing in the dashboard even before since the new style admin dashboard was introduced. But earlier the version was shown in the update screen, which it does not anymore..

You are reporting a problem that has been fixed about a month ago.

Since only fixes for security bugs and other severe issues are backported, updates for your forum only contain those. Not everything else that was improved. You are on Discourse from July - with a few important fixes. You chose less changes, so you will have to wait for the next ESR version, which is released at the end of January.

esr

ESR stands for Extended Support Release. Approximately every 6 months, one of the monthly releases is designated as an ESR. ESR versions receive critical security fixes for a longer period — they remain supported for 2 releases after the next ESR is declared.

The tag esr always points to the latest ESR release. For backward compatibility, the stable branch and tag are aliased to esr.

The ESR channel is not necessarily more “stable” than latest. It’s more about the idea that the bugs are known, and it serves as a checkpoint for a specific set of features and improvements. With latest, there may be new bugs introduced, then fixed a few commits later.
