I have noticed this problem for a manually created group.
In my personal preferences I have “Send me an email when someone messages me” set to “Always”.
Still, I do not receive emails for group messages (I’m the owner of the group if that matters - not sure if it the problem would arise otherwise). Notification settings for the group are at “Watching”.
