Email submission wiped the message body

AI-generated summary

Discourse user fpoulain reported an issue where their email reply to a discussion was stripped of its content. They provided the original and received emails to demonstrate the issue.

fpoulman suspected that Discourse may have thrown away the message content because it resembled a reply to a previous message. pfaffman suggested that the issue might be due to the email format, specifically the inclusion of a header that could be mistaken for the original message.

sam noted that the reply via email feature was designed for top posting, not interleaved replies. They provided an example of how to format an interleaved reply and recommended avoiding signatures to minimize noise on the web interface.

fpoulain suggested adding a mention in the footer email to advise users to reply via top posting to avoid similar issues in the future.

Hi,

I have been using Discourse with mailing list mode for some years. I replied this morning via email and Discourse wiped out the content. You can see the message here: https://forum.chatons.org/t/comment-discuter-avec-un-utilisateur-a-propos-de-son-mot-de-passe-court-simple-etc/3227/20

Actually, it is not easy to reproduce.

Thanks for your work.

It looks to me like Discourse threw away the rest of the message because it thought it was only the message to which this was a reply.

Knowing that some of the text is edited will be very hard to discern.

Next time you want to include such text, perhaps remove the header or make it different somehow.

Does feel a bit like the Support category, we generally designed the reply via email feature for top posting.

In you are going for an interleaved reply try:

Coucou,

I would recommend avoiding signing as well cause we will not strip that and it can cause noise on the web interface.

If so, maybe you should add a mention in the footer email to advise to user to reply via top posting. Actually I use discourse for years using email and down posting and this buggy behaviors was new for me.
