Chat buttons in user context - 3 suggested enhancements

AI-generated summary

Two users are suggesting enhancements to the chat button in user context. nathank proposes three suggestions:

  1. Adding a Chat button on User pages next to the Message button.
  2. Allowing chats to start with an optional link to the post when initiated from a usercard in the context of a post.
  3. Providing an option to turn a quoted post into a Personal Message and/or a Chat.

nathank finds the current chat functionality helpful but limited, requiring multiple clicks to direct the recipient to a specific topic. jimkleiber agrees with Suggestion 1 and also proposes adding message and chat buttons to the Admin User page, allowing for quick messaging or chatting with users without visiting their public profiles. Additionally, jimkleiber suggests the possibility of bulk messaging or chatting with users from the Admin User page.

I find the Chat button on the user cards super helpful and use it all the time:

However, it can be quite a pain to direct the recipient to the topic I wish to refer to (if there is one). Doing this requires several clicks. If I wish to quote something it is even worse:

  1. Highlight text
  2. Click "Quote
  3. Copy the markdown
  4. Close reply and click Discard
  5. Hit Chat button on usercard
  6. Paste the markdown content

In /u pages

However, when I’m in a User Summary (e.g. meta.discourse.org/u/sam) it isn’t possible to initiate a chat directly:

Suggestion 1

Could we also please have a Chat button on the User pages next to the Message button?

Suggestion 2

If a user hits Chat on a usercard in the context of a post, could the chat start with an (easily deletable or optional) link to the post as in Personal Messages?

Yes, I know I can just use a Personal Message, but often an ephemoral chat feels a warmer and more appropriate way to do it.

Suggestion 3

If a post is initiated by "Quote, could there be an option to make it a Personal Message and / or a Chat?

I just had a bunch of new users join and I went to the Users tab in admin and wanted to just send a few quick chat messages to them to join, and found it really annoying to do it. Even after I clicked on show public profile I wasn’t able to send a quick chat, only message.

So I agree with suggestion 1:

Edit: The button has been added to the public profile…

I also think it may be helpful to have message and chat buttons on the Admin User page, so I can message them real quick from the admin space without having to then visit their public profiles.

Or if we get fancy, then a way to message or chat with them in bulk from the Admin User page, as then I could click on the New Users tab and then quickly reach out to the ones who just joined.
