Show actual dates on Top and other date range pages

AI-generated summary

A discussion is underway to improve the display of dates on the “Top” and other date range pages. codinghorror proposes showing actual dates instead of a calendar glyph, similar to Product Hunt. The suggested format would clearly indicate the selected time range. neil points out that for monthly and yearly periods, the actual dates would need to be displayed as “May 30 - Today” and “June 2014 - Today”. codinghorror agrees and also suggests adding a quarter time range to fill the gap between “month” and “year”. codinghorror reports that the preliminary changes are in place for the /top page, but still require tweaks, including adding the quarter time range and implementing the same behavior on the /users pages.

Rather than this for /top

We should show the actual dates instead, like Product Hunt does:

That way we could drop the calendar glyph, which never looked that good anyway, and it’s clearer what exactly you’re looking at when you select a time range on Top or in the User Directory.

(of course with the down arrow glyph to indicate drop-down-y-ness, not pictured in the above mocks)

@neil can you take this, since you’ll be touching the user directory soon, which has a very similar layout for time ranges?

For the monthly and yearly periods, they go back 1 month ago and 1 year ago, so the actual dates will need to be something like “May 30 - Today” and “June 2014 - Today”.

Yeah that’s fine. Also add quarter time range, since there’s precious little between “month” and “year”.

Ok this is in, in preliminary form, for /top. Needs a few tweaks (All time should show dates) and the Quarter (4 month) time range to be added.

Also bear in mind we want this same behavior on the /users pages as well.
