Why Is the Discourse AI Translation Icon Not Appearing?

AI-generated summary

In a support thread titled “Why Is the Discourse AI Translation Icon Not Appearing?”, Smooth_Play reports that the AI translation icon and translation buttons are missing in their self-hosted Discourse instance, despite successfully configuring Ollama with SambaNova. They also note limitations in translation scope and language support — for example, AI suggestions only appear in English, and translating to non-English languages requires manual input like “Translate to Portuguese”. After adjusting settings — specifically increasing “AI translation max post length” to 20,000 and “AI translation backfill max age days” to 50 — Smooth_Play finds the feature begins working. They also ask whether translated content is search-engine indexable, to which Falco confirms it is. Later, Smooth_Play inquires about supporting more than 10 languages, and Falco reveals a hidden setting, content_localization_max_locales, which defaults to 10 but can be modified via the Rails console. tobiaseigen reminds users to start new topics for new questions. The issue appears resolved through configuration tweaks, and undocumented settings offer further customization.

I don’t know why, but the site-wide toggle never appears in my instance. Does it require the discourse-translator plugin enabled?

Actually… no buttons to translate anything appear at all.

Hello everyone,

I’m self-hosting Discourse, I managed to get Ollama to work reasonably well by setting the Discourse AI LLM settings with SambaNova pointing directly to Ollama Server.

However, I have some questions…

This Icon never appears…

And I’m not sure how to translate posts.

Also, there seems to be a limit to the content that can be translated. I wonder how I can translate everything to multiple languages.

Also, when I try to suggest with AI, it doesn’t suggest in the language of the user, only in English. And the default button to translate a topic seems to be only: Translate to English (US)
Need to write for example: Translate to Portuguese
In order to translate to other languages.

I’m kinda lost.

Wow… it magically started working after I changed this fields to:

AI translation max post length: 20000

AI translation backfill max age days: 50

Strange…

Seems to be working quite nicely now. I wonder if translations are also indexable by search engines.

Yeah, that’s how it works per Content Localization - Manual and Automatic with Discourse AI

Yes, they are!

Thank you so much for your feedback, so you know if it’s possible to add more than 10 languages? Even if not officially supported?

There is a hidden sure setting named content_localization_max_locales that defaults to 10. You can change it via the rails console.
