In our community, we observe that some first steps badges are not granted even though they should be. We observe this at first edit, first link, first mention and first like in particular. Maybe they are only counted in starting posts, and not in replies?

Yeah, by design badges are only granted on public info. You can create badge by hand and assign to members regardless of posting, but that can get tedious.

Oh this might very well be it. At the moment, quite a significant part of our activity is non-public.
