Users reported that automated emails fail to send if the subject contains two emojis, with no warning provided during automation setup. ZeroDean noted that while manual sending shows a helpful error message, automation silently fails. sam agreed that a visible warning—like a counter showing recent errors—would improve usability and asked if any errors appeared in /logs. ZeroDean confirmed no relevant logs were found, despite checking system logs at https://yoursite/logssam. After further testing, ZeroDean offered to reproduce the issue to confirm log visibility. zogstrip praised the suggestion and submitted a PR to centralize logging for the automation plugin with a [discourse-automation] prefix for easier searching. The PR was later merged zogstrip, improving error traceability for future issues.
I have sent emails via automation with one emoji in the title successfully.
I recently added a second emoji for a message. That message never gets sent. Took me a while to notice.
In attempting to send the message manually, I was given a very helpful warning along the lines of “cannot send message with 2 emoji in title”.
I understand why this kind of warning wouldn’t be present before an attempted automation, but it would be very helpful if this was explicitly mentioned on the automation interface rather than simply failing and leaving users guessing why.
I’ve been running Discourse for a month now (new user, hosted service) and this is the first I’ve heard of the email logs. Apparently I’m blind.
And no. There’s a lot of data in there currently, but I could not find any reference to the ~40 automated messages that did not go out due to the double emoji in the subject.
It’s possible I’m missing them. I can do a specific test for it later if necessary.
The diff looks big but it’s mostly because I centralized how we log in the automation plugin so that we always have the [discourse-automation] prefix so all the logs can be searched with it.
