More friendly category creation

Someone pointed out that creating categories and tags feels cumbersome, and that this friction might discourage new admins from adopting Discourse.

I asked Gemini to generate a category planner. The result looks quite nice. I don’t think it should or could be added to Discourse as-is, for many (good) reasons, but it’s still interesting to look at. It might spark ideas for Discourse’s future.

Context: How to add multiple tags up front

Moving a category outside a parent is a bit wonky. You must drag it onto the parent, then to the left. Not intuitive, but again, this is more of an interface concept than a real solution.

The Discourse admin UI can feel harsh at first. The software is complex, full of settings, and has grown even more complex over the years. An overhaul of some parts of the administration by making them more visual, interactive and playful, especially the areas people hit right away when they try to configure the basic options of their community, could be worthwhile.

I wonder how many people turn away from Discourse after being intimidated by the current interface.

I decided to make this topic after this reaction to Gemini’s creation:

We are currently planning on improving category creation, including all the various features categories can encompass (voting, solutions, etc) — all your feedback is very true!

Wow, this is incredible, I’m using it now and it’s really the kind of thing I was thinking of. Just one question at this stage, for permissions, does “group” mean all members? if I want to give permissions to a sub-group (e.g. “vets”), do I just write “vets” and that’s it?

Oh, also: is the .csv importable into Discourse at this stage or not? (no huge deal if it isn’t, it’s already wonderful to have an interface where I can play about with my structure)

By default it’s everyone unless you specify groups. When you click Add A Group, it should detect your existing groups.

I thought there was a way to bulk add via csv but I’m not seeing it. You’d be surprised how many you can copy/paste into the field though directly from a csv.

I think we have a confusion, I’m asking about the UI @Canapin just built… for the moment I have no groups or anything set up in Discourse, I’m just trying to design the structure!

This tool came out of me asking Gemini, “how would you imagine a friendlier interface for managing Categories in Discourse?”

It’s really just an interactive mockup to play around with :slightly_smiling_face:.

The import/export buttons weren’t tested, and exports definitely can’t be imported into Discourse.

About groups: in actual Discourse, there are three permissions (see, reply, and create) which can be assigned to built-in or custom groups. In this tool, the permissions field is like the rest, just an arbitrary placeholder.

Think of this as an elaborated white board for planning categories than anything connected to Discourse itself :slightly_smiling_face:

Quite impressive, really – it’s already quite usable! I have exported a bunch of versions of what I’ve done, but haven’t yet tried to import (haven’t dared refresh the tab, hehehe).

Thanks for the clarification regarding the permissions field in the “interactive mockup that’s already helpful”

Fine for me already as is!

Question though: is there any way to import a list of categories into Discourse, like there is a way to import tags from a CSV?

There are many whole-forum migration scripts, but I’ve never heard mention of a tool just for setting up empty categories.

If the prospect of creating your categories via the interface feels like a lot of work, you miiiight have too many categories…

After creating a couple you get the hang of it. I haven’t done it in a while, and I just added a new category with basic color, position, and permission settings with an updated welcome topic in about 90 seconds: (video)

(I’ll note that several of the categories in the menu seen there are limited to one group or another. As admin I see everything, but most members only see 6 or 7 categories in their list.)

@Canapin so, after playing a bit with it, I mistakenly refreshed the browser window, which gave me an opportunity to try the “import” button. I can report back that export works (see attached file), but import silently fails :joy:

discourse_categories-7.csv (3.4 KB)

I miiiight  but if I’m to narrow them down, the interface isn’t the place that’s going to help me narrow them down

You know, I think it’s not so much the actual time needed to create a category that is the problem, but the cognitive overhead due to having to go back and forth between screens where only a small part (one category… and a subset of settings for it) of the overall structure is visible. What the visual mockup does is allow me to keep everything in front of my eyes while I’m fiddling with categories and settings, so I can iterate and see what works and doesn’t.

Oh yes, I fully agree re. plan & mock up your structure first. I was commenting on the idea of importing a category list into Discourse, which might make sense if you’re Proctor & Gamble, but for most of us would be a lot of squeeze for a little juice.

If I wanted to try and modify the tool to at least make import work, how would I do that? Is there a way I can make a “copy” of the tool you made to work on it? Was your prompt really just those few words?

Following up here. I’m now in Discourse trying to clean up my categories. It’s a really cumbersome process.

  1. go to “all categories” page
  2. click on the category I want to modify
  3. click on the wrench, make modifications
  4. click “save” at the bottom and no visible feedback tells me that has actually done something
  5. ok, I guess I’m done, where do I go now? ah, “back to the category”
  6. hmmm right now I’m back on the category page that I’m not interested in anymore, how do I get back to the main category page? ah, sidebar > all categories… guess I should have clicked that before

Some of my expectations along the way:

  • when I click “save” I’d like something on the page to confirm I did indeed save
  • for my use-case, where I’m cycling through all my categories to restructure them, or change permissions, or colours, or descriptions, or whatnot, I want to (at least) go back to the main category page, and yes, there is that link in the sidebar, but I kept looking for something in the main content area to “take me back where I needed”
  • even if we don’t get something as pretty as the visual mockup presented in this thread, it would be so much easier to have a big table with all the categories and important settings in there that I can modify, so I can do this initial category setup/housekeeping without having to click through (literally) dozens of screens again and again as the strategy for the community structure evolves, without a good overview.

It may be helpful to use the dropdown to navigate to the next category if you want to edit that.

I am also unsure what you expect from clicking save. On my forum, the button changes to “saving” and once that’s finished, it changes back to “save”.

oh you’re right, somebody (you?) mentioned it already but I had forgotten.

If it’s doing that (it might!) it happens so fast I’m not seeing anything. Also, I have to say that once my brain has given the order to my finger to click, my eyes are already somewhere else. I’d expect a little something at the top of the page saying “saved” – like on WordPress, I guess

I gave Gemini the main attributes of a category (name, color, tags, etc) and asked: “Can you output a js/html5 tool to create and organize categories with these attributes? We should also be able to quickly edit and rearrange”.

The produced tool was already great, but I fine-tuned it by asking to remove/add attributes and features as well as tweaking the design.

Probably. You can send the code to Gemini (use the Canvas mode) and ask it to tweak it like you want:
