Own username and avatar displayed when looking at other people’s Rewinds

AI-generated summary

Users reported a bug where their own username and avatar appear when viewing others’ Rewinds, specifically in the AI greeting (‘wake up [username]’) and chat sections. JammyDodger highlighted the issue with screenshots, prompting awesomerobot to announce a fix via GitHub PR #36742. Moin raised a related concern about confusing wording — such as using ‘you’ to refer to the rewind owner — and asked if phrasing could be adjusted for clarity. zogstrip confirmed changes were underway via PR #36937. Later, Moin questioned whether gender-neutral pronouns (‘they’) in chat sections should be replaced with usernames, especially for German translations lacking gender-neutral options. zogstrip agreed that using ‘you’ in chat is contextually clear and preferred, and confirmed that PR #37042 now replaces gendered pronouns with username placeholders to ease translation. The consensus favors clarity and localization flexibility, with fixes already in development.

When having a browse of other Rewinds I’m noticing that my username is consistently displayed as part of the ai section’s ’wake up [username]’ text:

Also, the current user avatar is populating the chat section:

Is it possible to change the wording used when you look at other users’ rewinds, too?

I am a little confused by all these “you” which are actually not me. It wasn’t me who spent that time reading, who visited/posted on that day, and whose best posts and topics are shown.

Hmm, I have a question about how others feel about the use of the name and “they” in the section about chat:

For me, it’s perfectly fine when I read a stranger’s chat and they use “you.” I can tell who they mean from the context.
So before I spend a lot of time thinking about how to deal with “they” in these cases in the German translation, because unfortunately, there is no gender-neutral pronoun in German yet, I thought I’d ask if others think this is necessary.

Alternatively, I might like to add the name as a placeholder, even if it is not used in English. Several times “Moin” might sound strange, but it’s probably better than “the person.”

I agree :+1: The chat context is indeed very clear and it makes the translations easier to do win-win

I’ve also replaced a few references to gender-neutral pronouns with the username placeholder so they can more easily be translated.
