Questions about Discourse AI automatic translation

These days I tried Discourse AI automatic translation. In forum 2 which is young with a few discussions the translator did well. But in forum 1 which has about 123 discussions… with translation only in English, it slowed down (which is somewhat normal). But it also broke one of the discussions, meaning it rendered it without spaces and newlines and which I could not fix.

But I’m still curious if any of you use this option:

  1. Did the AI translator help your forum?
  2. When do you think it is a good idea to activate this option? When the forum is new, or maybe when it has more discussions (100, 1000 and more)?
  3. If you have enabled this option in your forum, how did you set it up and why?
  4. If you have enabled this option in your forum, which languages have you enabled for translation?

There are a lot of discussions here in this forum per day and in general, and there are no subscriptions and the software is free… so it shouldn’t be expensive I guess…

Thank you for your time. :light_blue_heart:

  • Yes, I believe that helped, but just for fun I did it for no reason, as SEO or something like that.

In my case, I received access to the unlimited API for a couple of weeks and I paid for it after that, so if cost is a question for you, it’s not a good idea.

Just for fun and only enabled it like that, I used an API for content translation on 100K topics and posts.

So I had the right the timing and free time to follow the translation; it was the only way that I found to use AI in my instance and still translate my content. I cached 108M.

Wow. A really serious forum! Yes, it was a joke for me too, just to see how he would handle the translation, whether it would be accurate. Because years ago, machine translation… was at a very low level.

My currently active languages are:

I will consider adding a few more languages gradually. I still don’t have any serious data from Google search about discussions in other languages, but hopefully we’ll be alive and well and that will happen.

Thank you for your answer and your time. :light_blue_heart:

For studies cases: 19 jan I staterd to translate all content something as like this

I spent almost 9$ to complete using this API, at 19 jan until 26 was beta public with unlimited RPM and after with Input: $0.1 / 1M tokens, Cached Input: $0.01 / 1M tokens, Output: $0.3 / 1M tokens

My original lang is portuguese, some topics and posts had their translation done in a wrong way because this API something not read well emojis or certains terms in my mother lang.

I had the same problem with some discussions breaking up. But if there aren’t many emojis, tables, and the like, the translator handles the text well (at least so far). I haven’t released the Portuguese version yet, but I have time. If nothing else, the translator is at least good for fun. Still, when there are serious discussions, it’s good to check the translation, because of technical and scientific terms, as well as for possible insults. For example, as far as I have experience, not everyone accepts Balkan humor and satire, but for me it’s funny. Plus, it’s at a more or less reasonable price
