To address another point raised: what constitutes a new thread, and what constitutes an over-long thread, is very much a community norm. Some have mega-threads, others not; some allow for topic drift, others not. If you choose to care, then you need to take some approach to keeping things in line - whether DMs, or public comments, or rethreading with or without a message. The thing to note is that some people will take it badly, thinking of it as a rebuke or an insult, so be ready for that. Some people will want to demonise the mods, will see the forum as us-vs-them. Again, be ready.
