Thought experiment: might there be a case for auto-suggesting a username and keeping it visible and/or editable?
Say your third John Smith got blindly assigned johnsmith3, and would rather have been john_q_smith. Too late now. But…
- If the username field was visible and editable, he could just add the ‘q’.
- If the username field was visible and not editable, he could change his name input to John Q Smith and see the updated username result.
Something else to note, if this were to go anywhere, is the site setting username_change_period which defaults to 3 days:
