New users unable to login or sign up

AI-generated summary

A user on the free hosted plan reported that new visitors to their forum could not sign up or log in, receiving an error stating “No login methods are configured.” The administrator could access the site via /u/admin-login but found that Discourse ID was disabled and could not be enabled, while toggling local email logins did not resolve the issue. JearBear requested assistance to restore standard login functionality without losing existing site configuration.

The issue appears to have resolved itself, as singi2016cn confirmed the site was working normally upon testing. This was corroborated by chapoi, who noted that only Discourse ID is available as a login method for free sites.

Hi everyone,

I just created a forum on the free hosted plan: https://socalsaltwater.discourse.group

When someone visits the forum and clicks Sign Up or Log In, they get this message:

“No login methods are configured. Administrators can visit /u/admin-login to reconfigure the site.”

I’m able to get into my administrator account using /u/admin-login, but regular visitors still can’t sign up or log in.

Here’s what I’ve found in the admin settings:

  • Under Login & authentication → Discourse ID, the switch is off, and I’m unable to turn it on.

  • Enable local logins via email was checked, but visitors were still getting the error.

  • I tried turning that setting off and back on to see if it would help. Now, when I try to re-enable it, I get an error saying I must first enable Enable local logins.

  • I searched the site settings for Enable local logins, but I can only find the “via email” setting.

The sign-up and login issue was happening before I changed the email login setting.

Is there something I can do to enable Discourse ID, or does someone from Discourse need to fix it on their end? I’ve already set up my categories and forum appearance, so I’d like to keep the existing site if possible.

I’ll attach screenshots of the error, the disabled Discourse ID switch, and the local login setting.

Thanks for your help!

I gave it a try, and your website is now logging in properly.

I can also confirm it seems to work again when testing. It could have been a provisioning hiccup, as enable_local_logins_via_email should have been false.

Just a note that only Discourse ID is available as login method for free sites.
