Newly created: Where do I configure user login and authentication? Cannot find the settings

Hi Discourse community,

I just set up my Discourse site at https://aniluxion.discourse.group, and I’m stuck — I cannot find where to configure user login and authentication.

The problem:
Right now, users cannot log in or register because I haven’t configured any authentication method yet. I’ve looked through the admin panel, but I’m not sure where the login/authentication settings are located.

What I’ve tried:

  • Went through all settings in the admin panel (looked under Settings, Users, Security)
  • Searched for “login”, “authentication”,
  • Checked the official documentation, but still unclear where to start

What I need help with:

  1. Where exactly in the admin panel do I configure basic user login (username/password) and optional social logins?
  2. Are there any required steps before authentication starts working (e.g., email setup, site URL, etc.)?
  3. Is there a setup checklist I might have missed?

This is a fresh install — I haven’t touched any authentication settings because I simply cannot locate them.

Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Since this is the free plan, login is managed by:

No. Everything is set up and ready to go.

I do not think so, but you can take a quick read through You're invited to try the Discourse Free plan beta!.

I am unable to turn on discourse id.

Hi Naoshi,

Thanks for reporting this. I had a look at newer Free sites and ID seems to be configured correctly on them so it’s not a widespread issue. We’ll have a look at what went wrong with your site and come back to you.

Hi,

I see that you’re unable to turn on Discourse ID, but you’ll see in site logs that a ton of site settings were changed on your site and some were related to authentication. Were you trying to make a specific change or just experimenting?
