i can do this no problem on my iphone, so i’m guessing you’re on android. 
edit: nevermind i see what you mean - i did it the other way by typing then highlighting to pre-format the text but you’re correct, it does a full block then you’re trapped or you have to leave an empty line. 
edit 2: seems like i can just tap below in chrome on iphone. safari not so much…
