The discussion revolves around implementing a feature to limit the number of topics per user in specific categories, with two use cases proposed: one allowing only one topic per user in a ‘Jobs - Resume’ category, and another allowing only certain users to create one topic in an ‘Official company pages’ category. meglio suggests a database change with a new field in the categories table to enforce this limit. codinghorror and Sander78 argue that this functionality should be implemented as a plugin rather than a core feature, as it’s not a common requirement. sam supports this view, emphasizing that the core should provide extensibility points for such features. meglio seeks guidance on the recommended plugin setup, and sam provides a link to a beginner’s guide for plugin development.
Use case #1: we would like to have a “Jobs - Resume” category and would allow only ONE topic to be created in that category by any user.
Use case #2: we would like to have an “Official company pages” category and would allow only ONE topic to be created by SOME users (btw, is there any way to allow only users with a particular badge to post to a particular category? - if yes then we would grant a Company Representative badge and make a category where only holders of that badge can create topics, and preferrably would limit them to only one topic per user). This can also be one of ways to monetize with time.
