I’m running a community that historically has a bit of a problem with necro-bumping threads.
I am familiar with warn_reviving_old_topic_age (and we do have it set), but it seems that many users aren’t seeing the alert. We also don’t want to institute global topic timers because there really are use cases where reviving the old thread is useful.
Our previous solution was to block posting on an “are you sure” dialog based on this component:
however, both our necro-warning and the linked component above no longer seems to work (an out-of-the-box install of the admin-warnings thread allows me to post in closed topics unimpeded).
How should I proceed? I’m not afraid of getting my hands dirty and building my own component/plugin from the ground, but I’ve been struggling to find documentation on where to start.
is this not something that can be handled through moderation? Just send a PM with warning to the people doing the necrobumping to let them know not to do that?
If it persists, you can create an announcement topic and banner it, to reinforce the policy.
I think a little added friction with a confirmation pop-up is perhaps more proportionate than going straight in with a full-on official warning.
Though if certain members routinely ignore the pop-up you may still need to reach out to find out what their thinking is. They may just need a friendly nudge to realise what’s expected.
I think if you’re looking to build your own theme component for this you may be better slipping this over to the Dev category to get more eyes on it.
I haven’t checked to see if the necro warning still shows for me, but generally the Just In Time (JIT) messages don’t show up on mobile (which is unfortunate ). And it does look like the Warn admins/tl4 when replying to closed topics theme component is marked as broken now.
